April 29th, 2010 - A Statement in Solidarity Against Arizona's Draconian Immigration Law

Common Law stands in solidarity with activists across the country in denouncing the state of Arizona’s Immigration Bill S.B. 1070 as racist, xenophobic, and unconstitutional.

S.B. 1070:

  • Promotes racial and ethnic profiling as a rational practice within the police department and other law enforcement agencies;
  • Encourages anti-immigration fear mongering;
  • Promotes further militarization of the United States-Mexico border and surrounding communities;
  • Amounts to a civil rights violation, particularly affecting communities of color;
  • Violates constitutional guarantees of equal protection under the U.S. Constitution as well as the prohibition against illegal search and seizure;
  • Violates the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination and other international instruments created to protect all peoples of the world;
  • Misappropriates state funds that could be utilized to benefit the residents of Arizona;
  • Stymies the national immigration debate; and
  • Jeopardizes diplomatic relations between the United States and Mexico

We also stand in solidarity with members of local law enforcement, such as Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik, who have put their reputations on the line for protesting S.B. 1070.

We denounce public officials, particularly Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, who stand in favor of this law, and we urge citizens across the country to voice their dissent.

We urge our leadership at local, state, and national levels to use this injustice as a springboard toward widespread federal immigration reform. We do not believe that any human being is illegal.

As a legal non-profit dedicated to fighting social, racial, and economic injustice, we thoroughly and emphatically denounce S.B. 1070, in all its forms, as a despicable and irresponsible measure that will irrevocably impact communities of color in Arizona and throughout the United States.

It is essential that all people - citizens, residents, and visitors - protest S.B. 1070 and block the passage of future anti-immigration legislation around the country. S.B. 1070 affects every human being living in the United States, regardless of legal status, and we will not stand for this injustice in Arizona or anywhere else.

In Solidarity,

Common Law, Inc.
